Woke Opera Alert! Met Stages Finnish School Shooting Melodrama
Elitist opera house virtue signals with trauma tourism, exploiting a tragedy for woke points.

So, the Metropolitan Opera, bastion of bougie elites, is staging this thing called 'Innocence,' about a school shooting in Finland. Because apparently, American tragedies aren't depressing enough, we gotta import some from the land of saunas and socialized healthcare. Written by some dead Finnish composer and a novelist who specializes in 'gender-based violence' – you just know where this is going.
This isn't about art; it's about virtue signaling. It's about rich people patting themselves on the back for feeling sad about something they have absolutely no control over. It's trauma tourism for the one percent. They'll weep into their champagne flutes and then go back to their gated communities, completely detached from the real world consequences of, you know, actual crime.
They're performing this thing in NINE different languages. Because nothing says 'relatable human experience' like forcing people to read subtitles while they're supposed to be experiencing raw emotion. Bet they don't perform it in American English, the language of the people they claim to care about. Bet they would rather use Spanish, just to piss off the MAGA crowd.
And of course, it's all about 'guilt' and 'grief' and 'how time doesn't heal.' No mention of personal responsibility, no exploration of the underlying societal issues that lead to these tragedies. Just a bunch of hand-wringing and navel-gazing. It's cheaper than therapy and gets them a good write-up in the NYT.
According to the conductor, Susanna Mälkki, "It’s important to understand that even if there are things that aren’t spoken about openly, it doesn’t mean they’ve disappeared." Okay, Susanna. And it's important to understand that staging a pretentious opera isn't going to solve anything either. Maybe instead of funding this woke garbage, they could donate some money to actual mental health services.
And let's not forget the creative genius of Sofi Oksanen who 'brought in the school shooting element'. Just what everyone thinks of when they think 'wedding'. We get it, Sofi, you want to be edgy. Try writing something original instead of exploiting real-world tragedy for your 'art'.
This opera is, at its core, an insult to the victims of violence. It's a cheap attempt to capitalize on tragedy for artistic and political gain. Skip the opera, donate to charity, and maybe, just maybe, we can make a real difference. The only thing that will be 'healed' by this performance is the Met's image. They think we're stupid. Are we?
