Timberwolves Coping Hard: Minnesota Trades Whole Future and Fan-Favorite Naz Reid for Glass-Ankled LaMelo Ball
Minnesota panic-sells their draft capital all the way to 2033 because they got absolutely cooked by the Spurs in the second round.

Hold onto your seats, because the Minnesota Timberwolves front office has officially entered panic mode. In a desperate bid to convince everyone they have a real championship window, Minnesota is reportedly sending fan-favorite Naz Reid, an unprotected 2033 first-round pick, three pick swaps, and three second-rounders to the Charlotte Hornets. What are they getting in return? LaMelo Ball and guard Josh Green. Yes, you read that right. They traded their entire future and a beloved locker room legend for a guy whose ankles are made of actual paper-mâché.
Let’s look at the absolute haul of assets Minnesota just threw out the window. Charlotte gets a 2033 unprotected first-rounder, first-round pick swaps in 2028, 2029, and 2030, plus second-round picks in 2029, 2032, and 2033. By the time that 2033 pick actually conveys, we’ll probably have flying cars, and LaMelo Ball will have been retired for five years. Meanwhile, the Hornets also walk away with a record-breaking $41 million trade exception. This is an absolute masterclass in fleecing by Charlotte’s front office, who are probably laughing all the way to the bank.
To make matters worse, Minnesota had to part with Naz Reid to get this deal done. The 26-year-old, 6-foot-11-inch forward was a certified cult hero in Minnesota, playing all seven of his NBA seasons there and averaging 13.6 points and 6.2 rebounds last year. Reid actually showed up to work, played hard, and didn't complain. But instead of rewarding loyalty, the Wolves decided to ship him off to Charlotte so they could pay LaMelo Ball's astronomical, franchise-record $203.9 million contract. Talk about a brutal vibe check for the locker room.
Let's talk about the prize of this trade: LaMelo Ball. Sure, the kid has crazy highlights and finished second in the league with 272 threes last season. But he has also missed 141 games over the prior three seasons. His lower-body joints are a ticking time bomb. Last year, he managed to play 72 games and average 20.1 points and 7.1 assists, but his efforts only led the Hornets to a mediocre 44 wins and a total blowout loss in the play-in tournament against Orlando. In six seasons, Ball has never once touched real playoff basketball. Good luck explaining to Minnesota fans how this guy is going to carry them to a ring.
This entire trade is a massive cope by Minnesota because they realized their roster is stagnating. After making the Western Conference finals in 2024 and 2025, they got absolutely exposed last month, losing in six games in the second round to the San Antonio Spurs. Realizing they aren’t actually on the level of champions like OKC, they decided to blow up their depth to pair the number three pick of the 2020 draft (Ball) with the number one pick (Anthony Edwards). On paper, it looks like a video game lineup. In reality, it’s a recipe for disaster if Ball's ankles decide to give out in December.
