Senate Takes Two-Week Vacation After Getting Wrecked in Trump Loyalty Lunch
While DC politicians run away from hard votes, Trump is calling in Speaker Mike Johnson to force a vote on the Save Act.

It is an absolute circus on Capitol Hill today. The US Senate literally packed up its bags and ran away for a two-week recess yesterday after a closed-door lunch with Donald Trump turned into an absolute shouting match. Trump made a rare appearance in their neck of the woods, and things immediately went off the rails. The swamp dwellers couldn't handle a basic loyalty check and some tough questions about why our military engagements in the Middle East are dragging on forever, so they did what they do best: took a sudden vacation.
The main event of the lunch was a massive blowup over the US-Israel war on Iran. Trump rightfully called out four senators who have been trying to rein in executive power and weaken our strategic position. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana got into a straight-up yelling match with Trump over it. Then Senator John Kennedy chimed in, complaining to reporters that they weren't getting the full story on the war. Kennedy whined that the military action was supposed to last four weeks, but it's been four months now. Welcome to foreign policy, boys. Maybe if you stayed in Washington instead of going on a two-week recess, you could figure it out.
Meanwhile, Trump is showing everyone who is actually running the show. Just hours before the lunch, he completely nuked a bipartisan housing bill, scrapping the signing at the last minute. Why? Because he’s focused on what actually matters: securing our elections. Trump is demanding the Senate stop playing procedural games and change the rules to pass the Save Act, a voter ID bill that would finally tighten up election security. Naturally, the establishment Senate is crying about 'tradition' and refusing to act, leaving a massive gulf between the White House and the upper chamber.
With the Senate sleeping on the job, all eyes are on House Speaker Mike Johnson. He's got a high-stakes 2:00 PM meeting with Trump today to try and get the House moving. Johnson is in a tough spot, trying to throw Trump a bone while dealing with a rebellion from the right wing of his own caucus. The conservative rebels have been blocking the Save Act, but Trump and Johnson are hoping to finally pressure them into taking a vote and securing our elections before the next cycle.
To make things even more hilarious, the Democrats are busy stabbing each other in the back. In a massive split with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Maryland's progressive darling Senator Chris Van Hollen just endorsed Abdul El-Sayed in the Michigan Senate primary. The leftist coalition is fracturing in real-time as the establishment tries and fails to keep their progressive wing under control. You love to see it.
