Saudi 'Vision 2030' Goes Full Retard: Turns Out You Can't Just Print Money, Even With Oil
MBS's sci-fi boondoggle hits reality, proving that even desert kingdoms can't defy basic economics. Cope.

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - Remember when MBS, aka Mohammed bin Salman, promised us flying cars and robot maids in the desert with his 'Vision 2030'? Turns out, even with all that sweet, sweet crude oil money, you can't just LARP as Elon Musk without consequences. The Saudis are now quietly admitting that their hyper-ambitious plan to turn the Kingdom into a real-life Tomorrowland is facing, shall we say, challenges.
Vision 2030, backed by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) – a giant piggy bank stuffed with almost a trillion dollars – was supposed to usher in a new era of technological marvels. But now, the $500 billion Neom mega-project, including that ridiculous 100-mile-long straight city called 'The Line', is being downsized. Turns out building a dystopian sci-fi set in the middle of nowhere costs more than originally estimated. Who could have seen that coming?
The winter resort of Trojena, which was supposed to host the Asian Winter Games in 2029 (lol), is also getting the axe. Apparently, turning a desert into a year-round ski resort is a tad difficult, even with unlimited cash. And The Cube, a building so big it could swallow the Empire State Building whole, has been completely scrapped. Probably because even the Saudis realized it was a monument to hubris.
The real kicker? Even LIV Golf, MBS's attempt to sportswash the Kingdom's image, is being called a 'dud' after burning through $5 billion. Turns out nobody cares about golf if it's funded by a regime that makes Kim Jong-un look like a libertarian. Ellen R. Wald, author of 'Saudi, Inc.', basically said 'told ya so'.
So, what's the takeaway? You can't buy innovation, and you certainly can't buy credibility. Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 is a cautionary tale about the perils of unchecked ambition and the limitations of even the deepest pockets. Guess it's back to oil wells and head choppings for the foreseeable future. Sad!
