Public Library Arc Ends in Tragedy: Chico High Graduate Tries to Speedrun a Columbine Copycat, Stopped by Fast-Acting Cops and a True Hero
An 18-year-old’s sick plot to terrorize a community library ends with two dead, a brave stepfather making the ultimate sacrifice, and the suspect instantly bagged by police.

In a grim reminder that society is struggling to keep its youth on the rails, an 18-year-old kid decided to skip post-graduation celebrations and instead try to speedrun a mass tragedy. On Monday afternoon, Bradley Scott Sayer—who graduated from Chico High School literally two weeks ago—strolled into the Butte County public library in Chico, California, and opened fire with a shotgun. The resulting rampage left two men dead, one child injured, and a community wondering how things got this twisted.
For a town of 107,000, the Chico library is usually the epitome of low-stakes civic life. It’s the place where moms take their toddlers for story time, immigrants practice English, and people who can’t pay their home internet bill go to browse the web. It also served as a recovery hub after the massive 2018 Camp Fire wiped out nearby Paradise and Magalia. But on Monday, Sayer decided this quiet public facility was the perfect venue to stage a sick tribute to the Columbine shooters.
According to the FBI’s Sacramento field agent, Sid Patel, Sayer’s plan was highly calculated. Shortly after 5:00 PM, Sayer walked into the library to scout the layout. Satisfied with his walkthrough, he went back to his car, grabbed his shotgun, and walked back to the entrance. He blasted his first victim right at the front door before marching inside to cause absolute chaos.
But Sayer’s cowardice was met with immediate, old-school bravery. Inside the library, 46-year-old Jacob Cody Hull was hanging out with his partner's daughter. When the shots started echoing through the stacks, Hull didn't hesitate. He threw himself in front of the young girl, taking the lethal hits so she could survive. Hull’s neighbor, John Wollam, confirmed the heroic sacrifice, marking Hull as a real-life protector who paid the ultimate price to save a child.
Meanwhile, the library staff showed they weren't going to be passive victims. Instead of panicking, the employees acted as tactical coordinators, ushering terrified patrons and families into locked backrooms. Branch Director Kimberlee Wheeler, who had to watch the disaster unfold via text messages while off-site, later expressed her absolute awe at how level-headed and courageous her staff was under extreme pressure.
Fortunately for everyone inside, the Chico Police Department did not play around. Dispatchers took 911 calls filled with screams and gunfire, and Chief Billy Aldridge’s officers pulled up in less than two minutes. Video from the scene shows cops running straight into the danger zone without waiting. They had Sayer on the ground and in handcuffs within four minutes of arriving on the scene.
