Ethiopia Holding Elections? Wake Me When They Stop Warlording.
Four years after 'peace' in Tigray, Ethiopia's playing democracy. But is it just another clown show?
So, Ethiopia's having elections. Yawn. It's been four years since they slapped a band-aid on the Tigray situation, and suddenly they're all about 'democracy'. Color me skeptical. This is the same government that was knee-deep in a brutal civil war not that long ago. Now they want us to believe they're suddenly champions of free and fair elections? Right.
The Tigray War was a mess. Bodies piled up, the economy took a nosedive, and the international community wrung its hands while pretending it wasn't happening. Now, after a 'peace' deal that probably involved some backroom bribes and shady deals, they're dusting off the ballot boxes.
What's the over/under on this election being rigged? I'm betting it's lower than the current administration's approval rating. They'll trot out some international observers, who will issue some mealy-mouthed statements about 'challenges' and 'areas for improvement'. But the result will be the same: the powers that be will stay in power. Surprise!
Don't get me wrong. I'm all for democracy. But this ain't it, chief. This is Kabuki theater. A performance designed to placate the Western donors and keep the money flowing. It's a fig leaf to cover up the fact that Ethiopia is still a deeply divided country with a long way to go before it can claim to be a truly free and democratic society.
Meanwhile, the real problems remain: poverty, corruption, ethnic tensions. But hey, at least they get to vote! For whoever the government tells them to vote for. It's like a choose-your-own-adventure book where every path leads to the same outcome.
So, yeah, Ethiopia's having elections. Don't expect too much. It's just another chapter in the ongoing saga of a country struggling to find its way. And if you think this is going to magically solve all their problems, I've got some beachfront property in Arizona to sell you.
At least this election might keep their warlords busy… for a little while. Maybe they’ll stop trying to kill each other long enough to stuff the ballot boxes. But as soon as it's over, it’s back to the same old, same old.
