Dance Theatre of Harlem Wokes Up 'Firebird' Again. (Is It Still Good?)
They're dusting off their 'lush, fantastical, large-scale production' set in the Caribbean. Prepare for feels… or eye-rolls.
So, Dance Theatre of Harlem is dragging 'Firebird' out of the mothballs. Apparently, it's their 'lush, fantastical, large-scale production' reimagined with a Caribbean vibe. Translation: get ready for some serious virtue signaling, possibly some 'oppression Olympics,' and definitely some takes on colonialism we didn't ask for.
Look, the original 'Firebird' is classic for a reason. Stravinsky slaps. But now it's been 'reimagined' for the modern era. Insert eyeroll emoji here. I'm not saying it's going to be bad, but I'm also not saying it won't be another example of woke-washing a perfectly good piece of art.
Is this just another attempt to signal their virtue and chase that sweet, sweet DEI funding? I mean, come on, we all know how the game is played. It's like Hollywood remaking every movie with a female lead just to avoid getting ratioed on Twitter.
And the Caribbean setting? Is that actually culturally relevant, or just a convenient way to check off some diversity boxes? I'm not saying they can't set it wherever they want, but let's be real, if they mess with the story, it will be a problem.
I will say one thing for them, though. It's good to see Dance Theatre of Harlem still doing its thing. They are an important part of American culture, and they have overcome a lot of challenges.
Maybe this 'Firebird' will actually be good. Maybe it'll be a flaming dumpster fire of wokeness. Place your bets, folks.
In the meantime, I'm gonna go listen to the original Stravinsky score and try to remember what art used to be before everything became a political statement.
