‘Cool Mom’ of the Year Charged with Second-Degree Murder After Buying Teen Daughter 173 Bottles of Booze
Gretchen Leanne Ryan allegedly bought her 16-year-old daughter hard liquor daily, leading to a fatal liver blowout while keeping dad isolated in the basement.

In what has to be one of the most astonishingly tragic examples of "best-friend parenting" gone completely wrong, a 55-year-old Colorado mother has been hit with a second-degree murder charge. Prosecutors say Gretchen Leanne Ryan basically acted as a personal bartender for her 16-year-old daughter, Grace Elizabeth Ryan, helping her drink herself to death in their suburban Arvada home. When police finally rolled up, they found the teenager dead, surrounded by a mountain of 173 empty bottles of hard liquor hidden in her bedroom.
According to the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office, young Grace was found unresponsive on March 9, 2026. The preliminary autopsy came back with some wild findings: the 16-year-old had an abnormally fatty liver, a condition usually reserved for middle-aged alcoholics. The medical examiner ruled her official cause of death as aspiration pneumonia caused by chronic alcohol abuse.
Instead of parenting, Gretchen Ryan decided the play was to be her daughter's ultimate drinking and smoking buddy. Investigators went through the mother-daughter text messages and found a daily log of degeneracy starting in September 2025. The pair frequently drank heavily and smoked weed together. The texts show the mom coordinating regular alcohol deliveries to the house on an almost daily basis, keeping the teen stocked up on vodka and various other brands of hard liquor.
But the domestic dynamic gets even weirder. While the mom and daughter were upstairs getting wasted and running up a massive bottle count, the father was living in the basement. The DA’s office revealed that Gretchen took active, daily steps to hide the teenager's extreme drinking habits from the dad, who was completely isolated downstairs.
As the daily drinking continued, the teen’s body began to literally fall apart, and the text messages prove the mother watched it happen in real-time. The texts contain graphic discussions of the 16-year-old vomiting blood, losing the ability to eat, losing the ability to walk, and having to wear diapers because her body was giving out. The girl even texted her mom that she was terrified she was going to die. But instead of calling an ambulance or, you know, stopping the liquor runs, Gretchen kept the booze flowing.
To make matters worse, the girl was completely cut off from the real world. In April 2025, she was un-enrolled from her actual high school to do "online classes." By the time she died in March 2026, she had only finished one semester of the ninth grade and hadn't left the house or seen friends in months. She was essentially a ghost living in her own bedroom, rotting from the inside out while her mom ordered the next bottle.
This is what peak modern parenting looks like when accountability is thrown out the window. The data shows alcohol deaths have more than doubled recently, especially among women, and this case is the absolute extreme of that trend. Gretchen Leanne Ryan is now locked up and facing a very real second-degree murder charge for treating her kid like a frat bro instead of a daughter.
