Big Energy Caught Red-Handed: Shady 'Grassroots' Groups Exposed!
Turns out, your 'local' activists fighting public power are just sock puppets for Big Utility. Who could have seen *that* coming?

Alright, folks, gather 'round the digital campfire. Tonight's tale is about corporate overlords, sneaky tactics, and the total sham that is 'grassroots' activism. You think those earnest folks protesting public power are just concerned citizens? Bless your heart. They're paid shills, funded by the very energy companies they're pretending to defend.
So, the story goes like this: Communities are starting to get fed up with their energy bills. They're tired of outages, slow clean energy adoption, and private utilities swimming in Scrooge McDuck-levels of cash. Places like Ann Arbor, Michigan, to San Diego, California, and St. Pete, Florida, are sniffing around the idea of public power – you know, 'munis' run by the local government. Lower rates, better service, more accountability – the whole shebang. Sounds almost…dare I say…socialist?
But Big Energy ain't gonna let that happen. They're staring down the barrel of billions in lost revenue. So, what do they do? They unleash the Kraken…or rather, a network of 'grassroots' front groups. Cue the dramatic music!
Exhibit A: The Ann Arbor Responsible Energy Coalition (A2rec). Sounds legit, right? Local folks fighting for…responsible energy! Except, their mailing address is literally the headquarters of DTE Energy, the notoriously unpopular private utility in Ann Arbor. Surprise!
Turns out, A2rec is swimming in nearly $2 million from DTE, its contractors, the utility lobby, and some shady industry consultant who probably has a whole Rolodex of fake activist groups. These guys even helped kill a public power vote in Maine back in 2023. Talk about a well-oiled machine of deception. It’s giving ‘We are legion’ vibes.
Sean Higgins, head honcho at Ann Arbor for Public Power (A2P2), spells it out: “The public power movement is a direct threat to their profits.” No kidding, Sherlock. “If this happens, then Ann Arbor is no longer paying them for electricity, so that cuts into their profit margin, so obviously they oppose it.” Capitalism 101, people. They’re not in it for us.
And the shenanigans don't stop there. In St. Pete, these utilities are allegedly scooping up canvassers from plasma donation centers. Desperate people shilling for Big Energy? Peak irony.
DTE Energy, when asked about their involvement with A2rec, gave the usual corporate non-answer, praising their own grid upgrades and agreeing with A2rec that public power is a financial disaster. You know, the usual talking points.
