Physics Doesn't Care About Socialism: The Real Reason Venezuela's Earthquakes Hit Different
While scientists write reports on 'different' seismic waves, anyone with a brain knows that corrupt building standards and a failed state are the real culprits.

So, NPR's Katia Riddle decided to run a segment on All Things Considered asking what made the deadly Venezuelan earthquakes 'different.' Well, let's skip the academic jargon and look at the obvious. Tectonic plates are going to move regardless of who is in charge, but when your country is run by a corrupt socialist regime that has spent decades turning a wealthy nation into a bankrupt failed state, even a moderate tremor is going to look like an apocalypse.
First off, the geological cope is real. Seismologists love to talk about transform faults, shallow hypocenters, and soil amplification. Yes, the Boconó fault is a real thing, and yes, Caracas sits on a big bowl of sedimentary jello. But guess what? San Francisco sits on a major transform fault too. The difference is, when the ground shakes in a developed, free-market society, buildings might sway and lose some glass. In Venezuela, entire concrete structures fold like cheap lawn chairs because the cement was probably cut with sand by some corrupt official trying to pocket a quick bolívar.
Let's be real: central planning cannot compete with basic physics. For years, the regime has completely ignored municipal building codes, pocketed infrastructure budgets, and left the population to live in chaotic, makeshift concrete shacks piled on top of each other on steep dirt hillsides. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that when you shake a pile of unreinforced cinder blocks built on mud, it's going to slide down the mountain.
When the disaster actually hits, the state-run response is a total clown show. The civil defense has no gas for their trucks, no functioning equipment, and absolutely no coordination. Instead of taking responsibility, the bureaucrats will inevitably blame foreign intervention or some other cartoonish excuse, while ignoring the fact that they spent the last twenty years stealing the money meant for disaster prep.
At the end of the day, gravity and plate tectonics are completely indifferent to political slogans. You can't social-engineer your way out of a shallow-focus earthquake. Until there is a complete overhaul of the corrupt, incompetent administrative state, the next seismic event will be just as disastrous, and the mainstream media will still be scratching their heads wondering why it 'hit different.'
