Hochul’s Socialist Side Quest Backfires Big Time After Primary Day Blowout
The Governor tried to play nice with the far-left on child care and tax hikes, but now the socialist blob is coming for Albany.

It turns out trying to feed the progressive alligator in Albany doesn't stop you from getting eaten. Governor Kathy Hochul is learning this classic political lesson the hard way after Primary Day, which saw a clean sweep of victories for the democratic socialist crowd. The political genius of trying to compromise with far-left activists has officially backfired, setting up a major headache for Hochul’s moderate-branded establishment agenda.
Before this primary wake-up call, Hochul was busy playing political footsie with far-left darlings like Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The duo spent their time cookin' up plans for massive state-funded child care expansions and plotting new ways to squeeze property owners with a second-home tax. Hochul probably thought these little policy concessions would buy her some peace and quiet from the activist class, but instead, it just gave them the energy drink they needed to run over her moderate allies.
The socialist plan for child care is exactly what you’d expect: throw billions of taxpayer dollars into a massive federal-style bureaucracy and call it a 'human right.' While Hochul tried to keep the spending under some semblance of control, the newly beefed-up socialist caucus in Albany isn't going to settle for minor handouts anymore. They want the whole printer, and they want it running 24/7.
Then there’s the second-home tax, otherwise known as the 'please leave New York and take your money with you' tax. Progressive dreamers like Mamdani think taxing luxury apartments will fund their utopian projects forever, completely ignoring the fact that wealthy taxpayers have wheels and can move to Florida in a weekend. Hochul’s willingness to normalize these tax-the-rich schemes has only made the socialist bloc hungrier for more punitive tax brackets.
With these Primary Day wins, the democratic socialists have officially upgraded their leverage in Albany. They aren't going to be satisfied with backroom compromises anymore; they’ve got the numbers to make Hochul’s life an absolute nightmare during the next budget cycle. Every single moderate bill is going to get held hostage until the progressives get their ideological tax hikes.
Hochul’s 'vision' for a business-friendly, stable New York is now officially on life support. You can’t claim you’re keeping the state competitive while simultaneously helping socialist lawmakers draft tax bills. The chickens have officially come home to roost, and they’re demanding rent control and universal basic income.
As the Albany clown show gears up for its next season, watching Hochul attempt to navigate this self-inflicted crisis is going to be peak entertainment. She’ll either have to capitulate to the hard-left demands or face total legislative gridlock from the very faction she helped elevate.
Either way, the taxpayers of New York are the ones who will end up footing the bill for this failed experiment in progressive appeasement.
