Clown World NYC: Socialist Mayor Rigged His Puppet Board to Force a Total Rent Freeze
Landlord rep rage-quits the Rent Guidelines Board, calling the pre-determined 7-1 vote 'theater' as Mamdani speedruns New York into the 1970s.

New York City has officially entered full clown-world territory. In a shocking twist that absolutely everyone saw coming, Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s newly stacked Rent Guidelines Board voted 7-1 on Thursday to freeze rents for nearly one million rent-stabilized apartments. The freeze applies to both one- and two-year leases starting in October 2026, meaning landlords get to watch inflation eat their property values while operating costs continue to soar.
The actual voting was preceded by some top-tier political drama. Christina Smyth, a landlord representative appointed by former Mayor Eric Adams, decided she had seen enough of the farce and rage-quit the board hours before the vote. In a public resignation statement, Smyth exposed the entire circus, accusing the board of blatant bias and "knowingly disregarding its own evidence." Smyth didn't hold back, calling the process an absolute sham. "The rebuilt board was required to deliver a rent freeze. Everything since has been theater," she said.
Of course, the theater was exactly what Mamdani promised his socialist base. Back in January 2025, during his mayoral campaign, Mamdani dropped a video laying out his master plan. He pointed out that terms for eight of Adams' nine appointees were up, and promised to replace them with loyalists who "understand that landlords are doing just fine." Fast forward to today, and Mamdani has hand-picked six of the nine members currently serving on the board. The outcome was locked in before anyone even sat down.
Board Chair Chantella Mitchell tried to play it straight, insisting the board served with "independence and integrity." Sure, Jan. Mitchell claimed that "comprehensive data" showed tenants are struggling with affordability. Meanwhile, the board completely ignored the basic laws of math and economics, pretending that landlords somehow don't have to pay rising property taxes, utility bills, or maintenance costs.
James Whelan, president of the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY), warned that this socialist victory lap is going to backfire spectacularly. Whelan pointed out that older rent-stabilized buildings are already drowning under rising operating costs, and freezing revenue means maintenance budgets are going to zero. Get ready for peeling paint, broken elevators, and crumbling ceilings, because when you make it impossible to pay for repairs, buildings tend to fall apart.
Historically, even former progressive mayor Bill de Blasio only had the nerve to freeze one-year leases during his tenure from 2015 to 2021. But Mamdani decided to go full send, freezing both one- and two-year leases across all five boroughs. It doesn't matter if it's an actual subsidized unit or a luxury rent-stabilized high-rise in Manhattan—everyone gets the same economically illiterate treatment.
This regulatory circus capped off a great week for the local DSA chapter. Just a day before the rent freeze, a trio of left-wing congressional candidates endorsed by Mamdani unseated moderate incumbent Democrats. Comptroller Brad Lander and activist Darializa Avila Chevalier knocked out sitting congressmen, while Claire Valdez rolled over her establishment opponent. The socialist takeover of New York is proceeding right on schedule, and the housing stock is going down with the ship.
